How to Keep Hair Healthy If you’re Addicted to Hair Iron?

It is important to keep your hair healthy and in the best condition by taking care of it. This is especially true when you are applying heat directly by using a flat iron, tongs and curlers. The first step to avoid heat damage is to get a good flat iron. This should be complemented the proper use of the iron and backed up by heat damage repair incase it occurs.

Choosing an Iron:

When looking for the best flat iron, you need to consider the material that you are going for. There are different types of materials:

  • Low quality ones such as plastic and metal. These two heat unevenly and carry the risk of burning off your hair.
  • High quality materials such as ceramic, gold, titanium and tourmaline. These heat up evenly, distributing the heat to every part of your hair. They also have negative ions which make your hair shine and close the cuticle after application of heat.

You will also need to choose the size of your flat iron. Larger flat irons are best used on thick ad strong hair whereas smaller irons are for brittle and thinner hair. The best hair straightener will also have varied options for heat settings. The digital ones ding to alert you when the temperature reaches your desired setting.

Using the Iron:

Using the iron is pretty straightforward. You only need to remember a few things:

  • Always start on hair that is completely dry. Working on damp hair will lead to shaft breakage. This is because the water will form bubbles and get trapped in the hair shaft and cause heat damage.
  • Always use heat protectant. It does not matter whether you have the best flat iron or not. Your hair needs to be protected against the heat. These protectants are available as liquids, serums and sprays.
  • Pass over each section of hair briefly. Do not spend too much time on one section as you will burn your hair. This holds even if the flat iron is on the lowest heat setting.

Repairing Damaged Hair:

If you happen to skip one of the guidelines above, you are sure to end up with heat damage. Although it takes some time to reverse the effects, it is still possible to nurture your hair back to health by:

  • Using a moisturizing shampoo. Buy a shampoo that is also sulfate-free. It will add moisture to the hair and protect the natural oils so that they are not stripped by the sulfates that are present in other shampoos.
  • Deep condition your hair weekly or even twice a week. This will infuse moisture to the strands since the hair is stripped of this moisture whenever a flat iron is used.
  • Get regular trims.
  • Lock in the moisture for longer retention with oil after every wash. When the hair is about 90% damp, apply the oil onto your strands.

Using a dual voltage flat iron will save you from heat damage. However, you still need to take up healthy hair practices to ensure that your hair remains healthy over time.
