4 Bad Habits That Could Affect Dental Health

Although you may have a lot of good dental habits and brush your teeth thoroughly, floss regularly, and make it a point to attend your dental checkups – that isn’t enough. Aside from establishing good dental habits you need to make sure that you haven’t picked up any bad habits that could undermine them.

While there are many bad habits that could affect your dental health, the ones that you should focus on are:

  • Performing tasks with your teeth

Many people use their teeth as tools, to rip open bags of chips, unscrew tight bottle caps, and so on. While teeth can make these tasks easier, using them may cause damage or weaken them.

To put it simply teeth aren’t designed to be used as tools and over time they may crack, chip, or fracture if you use them in that way. Needless to say that could negatively impact your dental health and cause lots of problems.

  • Grinding teeth

If you grind your teeth you’ll gradually wear down the enamel and that can make you more susceptible to tooth decay and other damage. Unfortunately this habit is difficult to break, and some people even grind their teeth while they sleep.

Assuming you grind your teeth it is important to seek advice from your dentist. In some cases it may be caused by an abnormal bite that can be corrected, or in others your dentist may recommend you wear a mouth guard if you grind your teeth at night.

  • Eating ice

Ice cubes are bad for you – if you’re in the habit of eating them after you drink. It may seem harmless, but the fact of the matter is the cold coupled with the crunching of hard ice cubes can actually cause microscopic cracks in the surface of your teeth’s enamel.

Over time this damage will grow worse, and eventually it will increase the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and so on. Ideally you should stop crunching ice, but if you absolutely can’t resist you should at least start using crushed ice.

  • Eating and drinking sugary foods and beverages

As you may have guessed, sugar is one of the worst habits for your dental health and is the leading cause of dental problems across the world. The more you can cut down on sugary foods and beverages, the better off your dental health will be. A good place to start would be to cut down on soda, which is especially bad for your teeth.

If you are able to get these four habits under control, the affect it will have on your dental health should be pretty dramatic – especially in the long term.
